We are deeply grateful to all who upheld the Diocesan Youth Conference (DYC) in Same Diocese, Tanzania, in prayer from April 16-20, 2025. The Resource Team – Jude, Wilma, Sam – along with Fr. Simon and Full-Time Missionary Moses with his two children, tangibly experienced the power and protection of the Holy Spirit throughout the mission. This remarkable fruitfulness was made possible through the intercession, encouragement, and generosity of many.
The conference brought together 345 young boys and girls from 34 schools across the diocese – an unprecedented opportunity for the Jesus Youth (JY) movement to connect with a broad range of schools in one gathering. We are deeply thankful to Most Rev. Dr. Rogath Kimario, Bishop of Same Diocese, for graciously inviting JY to minister to these young souls.
Moses curated the program in classic Jesus Youth style, which deeply resonated with the organizers. While previous Easter conferences had been limited to a few sessions and cultural activities, the JY team brought a spirit-filled, heart-winning approach. Their commitment, testimonies, and personal sharing gave the event great depth. The presence of three locally trained JYs – Joseph, Patrick, and Diana – who ministered in Swahili, added immense value.
This was a first-of-its-kind conference in the African region, where the Jesus Youth team was entrusted solely with the spiritual and programmatic elements, while logistics were handled expertly by the Mangalore Diocese African Mission priests. Special thanks to Fr. George, who led alongside Fr. Vincent, the diocesan Youth Director. From airport arrival to departure, their generous support was unwavering. We also experienced beautiful hospitality from the Ursuline Sisters, who lovingly prepared meals throughout the five days.
Though initially reserved, the youth gradually opened up, and by the final day, many shared touching testimonies of how God transformed their hearts. Every participant was spiritually prepared to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ meaningfully and joyfully.
Two meetings with school leaders explored future collaborations, clearly indicating that the mission in Tanzania is only beginning and the doors are wide open for Jesus Youth to grow. The final day concluded with a Holy Mass celebrated by Bishop Rogath Kimario. His earlier meeting with Jude and Sam gave him a deeper understanding of our movement. After hearing the youth’s experiences, he shared his deep appreciation for Jesus Youth during a closing meeting attended by Fr. Simon, Moses, and the team.
On the final day, Bishop Rogath Kimario celebrated the Holy Mass and officially concluded the conference. Jude and Sam had met the Bishop earlier, giving him a broader perspective of our movement. On the last day, he also heard the youth sharing their experiences, and in our closing meeting with him – attended by Fr. Simon, Moses, and myself – he expressed his deep appreciation for what Jesus Youth is bringing to his Diocese.
A special mention goes to Sr. Sara, a Tanzanian nun and key animator whose dedication, availability, and support made her a vital part of this mission.
A profoundly emotional moment came during the farewell of a Mangalore Diocese African Mission priest returning to India. I was invited to share about Jesus Youth, and at the end, Fr. Victor, the mission superior, said: "Jesus Youth is the only hope of the Church. Continue the good work." His words affirmed and encouraged the mission deeply.
Beyond the conference, Jude and I listened to the challenges Moses faces in his mission – a humbling reminder of the sacrifices full-time missionaries make. As Jesus Youth, we must hold them in prayer and provide consistent support. One family in mission is not enough; regular visits from JY members are essential to strengthen and expand the mission.
We look to the future of this mission with great hope and joy. Here are some beautiful glimpses from DYC 2025.
