Jesus Youth Sri Lanka Responds with Compassion Amidst Devastating Floods
In late November 2025, Sri Lanka faced one of its most painful natural disasters in recent years as severe flooding and landslides struck the country following intense monsoon rains, further intensified by Cyclone Ditwah. The disaster resulted in the loss of more than 600 lives, with nearly 200 people reported missing, and over two million people affected nationwide. Thousands of families were displaced as homes were destroyed, access roads collapsed, and entire communities were left grappling with loss and uncertainty.
Amidst this widespread suffering, Jesus Youth Sri Lanka responded to the urgent call to stand in solidarity with those affected. Guided by the Holy Spirit and working in close coordination with parish priests and local Church leaders, young volunteers stepped forward to serve communities in need with compassion and commitment.
Relief efforts focused on the collection and distribution of dry rations, essential supplies, clothing, blankets, and bedsheets, with particular attention given to families in colder regions and hard-to-reach areas. Assistance reached several severely affected regions, including Awissawela and Puttalam. Alongside distributing relief materials, volunteers also helped families and parish communities clean homes and clear debris left behind by the floods.
Through the generosity of donors and the availability of young volunteers, Jesus Youth was able to accompany many families during a time of profound loss. This mission was lived not merely as an organised relief effort, but as a grace-filled opportunity to be present, to serve, and to love in simple and meaningful ways, reflecting the movement’s option for the poor.
As the nation continued its journey of healing, many volunteers shared that the celebration of Christmas took on a deeper significance—encountering Christ in those who were suffering and sharing hope where it was most needed.
Jesus Youth continues to hold Sri Lanka and all affected families in prayer, grateful for the privilege of serving during this difficult time and trusting in the Lord’s promise of restoration and new life even in the midst of pain.
